Australia is truly a lucky country.
Anybody who has travelled will appreciate this.
The author of the book “The Lucky Country” Donald Horne was driven around the bend by the positive meaning that his phrase came to be used as. His book was using the term more along the lines of ‘dumb luck’
“Australia is a lucky country run mainly by second rate people who share its luck. It lives on other people’s ideas, and, although its ordinary people are adaptable, most of its leaders (in all fields) so lack curiosity about the events that surround them that they are often taken by surprise.” – Donald Horne
While there are certainly plenty of things to still improve about Australia, the fact remains that we are a safe, free, prosperous and democratic country with a lifestyle that is the envy of large parts of the world.
People have voted on this subject with their feet. The migration to Australia remains high and our population is growing strongly. A lot of this migration is wealthy and highly skilled.
Over the last two decades it’s estimated that 80,000 millionaire migrants have moved to Australia. This is a persistent trend that places constant pressure on the real estate market.
As well as the migration we have the foreign investment. If you are a wealthy citizen of the parts of this map that are coloured red… would you keep all of your money at home or might you look to be buying some real estate in Canada or Australia?
Australians are beneficiaries of this luck, earned or not, it’s simply safe and good enough to invest entirely in our own country and catch a ride on the train of our increasing prosperity.
